With so many brands of speakers, head units and amplifiers, its such a hard choice to make. Especially when your reading someones review as well. One thing people don't take into account is that the other person maybe biased or the fact that every individual has different listening volumes.
Common brands people go for are like : JBL, JL, Mutant, Alpine, Sony, Kenwood, Pioneer, Clarion. These are commonly found everywhere at very good prices too. I am not an expert so had to do a lot of research regarding each brand and the speakers i wanted. None of these appealed to me or was just out of my price range.
After much much research, i decided on an American brand called Polk Audio, reading their mission statement and reviews by many Americans and UK owners, i decided to go for the Db Series, as it was the most value for money and performance speakers.
A lot of people say the depth on the FTO door speakers isnt great and that 6.5" was the ideal speaker size to get. But after installing them i noticed i had plenty of depth and room left. So in the future i think i will be upgrading to components but also bigger speakers ^_^
Sound quality is brilliant good mid bass and clarity of vocals very high. I bought these on a trip to America so it only worked out to be around £35, which in my eyes are an absolute bargain for the sound quality. These were only running on the headunit at first until i upgraded and added the amps in.
After having 6.5" front speakers installed i also got some polk audio 6x9s to go with it.
Quick tip for someone who's looking to upgrade, once you've decide on the size and brand and quality you want go for it, i see speakers as a long term investment. Don't get budget speakers its just no worth it. My friend needed to change his front speakers and bought some kenwood £20 ones from halfords LOL. Im still laughing today as mine totally out beats his no competition.
With front and rear speakers sorted, it was time to level up with a sub and amp for better quality. My car when bought came with 2 x Alpine 500 watt 10" subs and a sony amplifier but there was something wrong with the wiring so it never worked, until i bought a new amp and went to the audio shop to hook everything up.
